Open your banking app right now. We will wait.

If July made you wince, you are not alone. But you are at the exact moment where what you do next decides whether 2026 is your comeback year or just another “fresh start in January” situation. Five months is enough time to actually change something. Here is how.

1

Find Out What Actually Happened

Most people carry a version of their finances in their head that is way more optimistic than reality. I know this from coaching. The gap between what people think they spent and what they actually spent is humbling every single time.

Run three numbers before you do anything else: your rough net worth, your savings rate for the first half of the year, and your biggest spending leak. That is it. Three numbers and you will know exactly what you are working with.

This is not about shame. It is about data. You cannot fix what you have not measured.

2

Summer Got You. Own It and Move On.

Summer is the most underestimated budget killer of the year. Nobody warns you about it the way they warn you about Christmas. But the numbers tell the truth.

+20% Average jump in spending between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Vacations, concerts, weddings, “too hot to cook” dinners. Justified every time. Expensive every time.

You are not bad with money. You got ambushed by a season nobody put in your budget. Now pick the two categories that did the most damage, cap one of them hard in August, and if anything went on a credit card, build the payoff plan today.

Tax Extension Filers, This One Is for You

You filed an extension in April and told yourself you would deal with it later. Later is now. If you owe money, the IRS has been charging interest since April 15. Every week you wait is money gone for no reason.

  • Personal filers: October 15 is your deadline. Start gathering documents now.
  • S-Corps and Partnerships: Your extended deadline was September 15. Call your accountant today.
  • Self-employed: Q3 estimated taxes are also due September 15. Two deadlines, not one.
  • Cannot pay what you owe? File anyway. Failure-to-file penalties are far worse than failure-to-pay.

Q4 Is Coming Whether You Are Ready or Not

August through December is five straight months of above-average spending. Back to school, Halloween, Thanksgiving travel, Black Friday, Christmas. Back to back, no breaks. The people who make it through without new debt are the ones who planned for it in July. Open a separate “Q4 Fund” account today and start moving money into it weekly. When December hits, the money is already there.

5

Pick One Goal and Finish It Before December

Trying to fix everything at once is how you fix nothing. Pick the one goal that would actually change your financial stress level and put every extra dollar there for the rest of the year.

  • High-interest debt? Every extra dollar goes there, no exceptions.
  • No emergency fund? $1,000 minimum before anything else.
  • Missing your 401(k) match? That is free money. Capture it first.

$300 a month for five months is $1,500. $500 is $2,500. One finished goal before New Year’s is a completely different version of yourself than the one who started July.

Fall Travel Is Cheaper. But Only If You Saved for It.

After 500 flights across 30 countries I will tell you what I tell everyone: fall is the best time to fly. Prices drop, crowds disappear, and you actually enjoy where you are going. But cheaper flights do not help if you have not saved for the trip. Set the real budget today, divide it by your remaining paychecks before departure, and automate that amount weekly. If you are using points, book now. Good award space goes fast.

The real flex is coming home from a fall trip with money still in your account and starting November from strength instead of recovery mode.
